Plant roots are crucial for creating a strong and vigorous crop in several ways. Their role is highly versatile: they are responsible for the uptake of water and nutrients, while also ensuring firm anchorage in the soil. In addition, roots often serve as storage organs and help create a soil environment in which beneficial microorganisms can thrive.
The importance of strong roots
Young and actively growing roots promote nutrient uptake from the soil. For example, the uptake of phosphate and trace elements strongly depends on the surface area of lateral roots and root hairs, while the uptake of calcium, boron, and silicon is largely determined by the number of young root tips.
Especially at the start of cultivation, when the young seedling or newly planted crop is not yet well rooted, the crop is highly vulnerable. Unfavorable growing conditions such as cold, drought, or excessive rainfall can severely damage the young crop early in the season. Uneven crop emergence then requires significant correction throughout the remainder of the cultivation cycle to prevent losses.
